Before boarding your rocket to Mars, remember to pack these items Make sure you do not take them with you during the actual journey into space Firstly, everything must fit into a rocket that weighs a minimum of one tonne. SpaceX has not revealed the full contents of the Falcon Heavy rocket, but Musk said it will be able to carry around 64 tonnes to Mars. As the spaceship is filled with fuel and crew, the rocket would be able to deliver its cargo to Mars with this amount of cargo on board.
SpaceX would need to launch a total of 31 missions, like the one on Saturday, in order to start competing with United Launch Alliance. So far, the company has launched 18 Falcon 9 rockets, with the final eight scheduled to launch by the end of the year. Musk said he could build a new rocket every two weeks. Typically, a rocket takes about a month to build, Musk said. “I think we’re pretty close to having the ability to build and make rockets fairly quickly.”
Gwynne Shotwell, the president of SpaceX, said the company can now build rockets faster than it was ever capable of, thanks in part to some SpaceX employees who were previously employed at other firms. SpaceX’s Mars program, for example, will use two Falcon 9 rockets and a Dragon cargo capsule to take roughly 100 people to the Red Planet at a time. The first launch is slated for 2018. “Our ability to build and fly rockets and spacecraft is only possible because of all of the talent that came before us,” Shotwell said.
“We’ve launched about half a dozen Falcon 9 rockets since , and we’ve always had a flawless return-flight record, [one of the main reasons we wanted to] launch the new Falcon Heavy for the first time,” a spokesman for SpaceX told NBC News. SpaceX is also trying to land the first stage of the rocket back on solid ground rather than sending it to a floating platform. Musk had predicted that the rocket could fly customers to the moon and beyond by 2022, though his ambitious production targets have been stalled by technical and production challenges. The private rocketeer is one of the industry’s most colorful executives, famously launching a Roadster into space as a test payload aboard the company’s Falcon Heavy in February.
Elon Musk said the rocket carried a Tesla Roadster with a dummy driver, Starman, behind the wheel. The car is currently hurtling toward the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, but its journey is not expected to end well. In the past, Roadster’s trajectory has sent it crashing into the sun and within the orbit of Mars.
The SpaceX founder also launched the Falcon Heavy in January, a much larger rocket that also put a Tesla into space.
The Falcon Heavy was considered to be more of a prototype The Falcon Heavy is a very heavy vehicle and it will take a number of months for SpaceX to build a next-generation vehicle to replace it. The vehicle has completed three static launches at the Cape Canaveral pad, but the third one was a static test fire of all 27 Merlin engines in the vehicle. In the static fire test, no fuel is present in the vehicle and the only ignition in the engines is for the static firing event.
